Acupuncture for Narcolepsy
According to western medicine, a small group of neurons in the brain has been implicated in producing transitions from sleep to wakefulness and vice-versa. People with narcolepsy may have fewer of these neurons, or these neurons may have been damaged.
How does acupuncture work for Narcolepsy?
Acupuncture appears to have a balancing effect on brain chemistry/neurotransmitters. Improving dopamine and norepinephrine has the effect of elevating mood and wakefulness. Acupuncture has also been shown to have a beneficial effect on the healing of the brain and /or nerves/neurons after injuries or damages. Acupuncture strengthens muscle tone which may help prevent cataplexy. Acupuncture can treat emotional and other underlying affects of disorder to improve symptoms of narcolepsy.
Course of treatment
There are 10-15 acupuncture sessions in one course of treatment. Treatment frequency depends on individual condition. Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture.
